Feeling overwhelmed?

Trying to do everything above would be possible, and it could help your blog, but it would also burn you out quickly. No wonder so many people feel totally overwhelmed when they see such a list.

Don’t fret though; simply focus on the core activity only which is writing content.

If you only have time for one task, use it to write content. Continue to build a body of posts, even if you don’t publish them all at the same time. I find that when I’m in writing mode I can churn out articles and blog posts quickly. Then when I find that I’ve got a little more time on my hands because I’ve got some stock blog posts written I’ll then use that time to promote my best posts.


If you write great content and even just promote it slightly your blog will grow naturally, search engines will index the pages and you won’t lose your marbles!

2. KEY POINT: Have fun with it

This is essential and it’s one of the reasons why I always say you should ideally chose a niche or topic that you have a passion or healthy interest in.

You need to have fun with your blog, or else you’ll lose the motivation to keep it alive it very quickly. Whilst it is possible, if you pick a niche only to make money you’ll find it painful to write the content no matter what.

Some people say they’ll do anything it takes to make it work but at the slightest obstacle they throw in the towel.

Don’t let this be you!

While it’s good to give technical / instructional content… it’s generally very bland and boring to read. So think about ways to liven it up. I’ve written so much about including stories in your marketing and content.

Pay attention… this is a winning tactic that builds relationships and keeps readers engaged and more importantly buying!

3. Set milestones

What get’s measured gets done. That is why milestones are important.

They allow you to track the progress of your blog, and once you see things are getting better, you’ll get motivated to keep working on the blog. Examples of milestones you could set:

To reach 1,000 daily page views To reach 1,000 RSS subscribers To write a post that will receive 20 comments

It’s funny how much you can get achieved in a relatively short period of time if you set yourself a goal. Let me give you a current example:

Diane and I have recently set a goal to cruise around Cape Horn at the Southern tip of Chile, South America. So we sat down and built a list of things we also wanted to do whilst over there… Visit Peru, Chile, Falkland Islands, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil. Having set out the structure, we then added the detail and the list of things to do grew and grew.

Several travel agents told us it couldn’t be scheduled. Even specialist tour operators couldn’t arrange it, (seems they like an easy life), mainly because we wanted first or business class flights.

Not taking “No” for an answer, we split the tasks between us and set a goal to have it all booked by 1st September. On the evening of 2nd September 2012 we had everything booked just as we wanted it. We depart on January 20th 2103 for a fantastic five-week holiday in South America including a 14-night cruise around the Cape from Santiago in Chile to Buenos Aires in Argentina.

This demonstrates how by setting goals you build desire to get things done and also tells a personal story that keeps your reader engaged as I mentioned in point 2.

Copywriting is an art… but it can be learnt. Like everything else there is a structure to writing great copy. Get it wrong and it simply won’t achieve anything. Get it right however… and the sales will come flowing in!

Here are the top ten secrets in the copywriting blueprint.

1. Copy has just ONE function and One function only… It HAS to create Sales. Great copy does this by having the reader feel you are stood right next to them holding a one-to-one conversation.

2. Because you are ‘talking in person’ to your reader you must use simple, understandable and believable everyday language, just as you would in any face-to-face conversation.

3. And just like in conversation, it means putting those words in the right order on the page, you’re talking to your reader remember taking them on a journey with one conclusion, to buy.

4. Selling, whether in person or from a page, is a sequential process so first you must grab the reader’s attention. Then get them a little bit interested. Next powerfully build desire so they really, really want your product or service. Then cover any objections the reader may have and add-in some comparisons that prove how much better your product/service is or how it’s better value for money. Only then do you ask for the sale. This process is often known as the AIDA model – Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.)

5. Copy that creates sales includes words like: You, Free, New, Best, Now, Hurry, Magical, Fabulous and Unbelievable. The most powerful of all of these is Free, and the least powerful is any fabulous, magical, unbelievable word that gets overused, especially if it’s given a magical, fabulous and unbelievable exclamation mark to accentuate it!

6. Poor copy talks about the product or service. (eg: We have the largest team of experts in the country – is just a feature, you reader is left thinking “so what” and “It sounds expensive”). Good copy talks about what the product or service WILL do for the customer. (eg: Your call will always be answered by someone who will solve your problem – is a massive benefit to the customer and extremely compelling).

7. Always write in an active tone of voice, rather than a passive one. Tell the reader what will happen rather than what might happen. Writing “You will receive” is a hundred times better than writing “You can order”.

8. Planning is key. Before writing a word sit and draw up a list of who your customer is. Write down who they are, what they like to do, see, hear, read. What makes them tick and why they need your product or service. Then write down every feature and benefit you can about your product or service. Understand intimately the potential to write compelling comments to your reader about the benefits your product or service will bring to their lives. Now list their likely objections. Only then should you start writing the copy itself.

9. Be singularly clear about the purpose of your copy. What is your goal for the copy? Is it to sell from the page or to create an enquiry? Is to capture a name, telephone number, email address? What should the reader think, feel and then ultimately, do?

The best copy reads like it was written for a single person. The one person reading it at any one given time, not an anonymous, amorphous group commonly spoken of in corporate speak as the “target audience.”

10. Finally, and always remember this: The ONLY Great copy is the copy that does the job it was designed and written to do.
